CUERO -- La Vernia made things look easy last Friday night, as the Bear football team completely dismantled the Wharton Tigers to the tune of a 41-7 victory. The win improved La Vernia’s season record to 11-1, and gave the Bears an Area Championship to add to the trophy case.

With 21 first-half points, the Bears got off to a great start against the Tigers. Junior quarterback Colby Skelton scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 4 and 6 yards, and senior Landon Richter scored on a 5-yard run from scrimmage. Wharton managed its lone touchdown of the game with about 2:45 to play in the first half, and the Bears took a 21-7 lead into the break.

After halftime, La Vernia picked up right where it left off in the first half. Skelton scored on a big run from 29 yards out, and then again on a 9-yard dash from scrimmage. Senior Jevante Anderson scored a touchdown from 5 yards out, and La Vernia cruised on to a 41-7 playoff victory.

The Bears tallied 375 yards of offense against Wharton, and every one of them was courtesy of the ground game. Led by senior Vince Gill, La Vernia ran the ball a total of 67 times. Gill ran 32 times for 152 yards. Skelton ran 11 times for 81 yards, Richter had nine carries for 56 steps, and Anderson also ran nine times for 52 more yards. Junior Tristan Summy carried the ball five times for 20 yards, and senior Levi Andrews had one run for 14 paces.

The Bear defense also turned in another stellar performance, holding the Wharton Tigers to 124 yards of total offense. Wharton ran the ball 23 times but gained just 85 yards. Tiger quarterback Joseph Krenek was held to just 3 of 15 passing and was picked off once. The Bear defense also came up with a Tiger fumble.

The impressive area win lifts the Bears to 11-1 on the season, and moves them into the regional semifinals this Friday, Nov. 29, against Port Isabel.

The Port Isabel Tarpons are unbeaten this year at 12-0, and are coming off a 40-7 win over Orange Grove. The Tarpons and Bears will do battle at Corpus Christi Calallen, with the winner moving on to the region final. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
