CORPUS CHRISTI By continuing the team’s winning streak, the Bear football team dropped the previously unbeaten Port Isabel Tarpons out of the playoffs, and earned a trip into the Region IV final. La Vernia defeated Port Isabel 21-14.

The Bears came away with the win, but the Tarpons scored the first points of the game.

Port Isabel’s Miguel Ramirez made the touchdown with a blocked punt, returning the ball for 1 yard with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter.

The score stood 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bears quickly recovered by putting points on the board within seven seconds in the second quarter.

Vince Gill completed the 11-yard run to earn the touchdown. Kyle Douglas made the kick.

Gill scored the Bears’ second touchdown of the game with a 6-yard run with 5:01 left in the half. Douglas’ kick was good, making the score 14-7 in favor of the Bears.

Continuing the scoring lead in the second quarter, Colton Kubena returned a Tarpon fumble with 4:05 remaining in the half, for 23 yards. Douglas earned the extra point, and the Bears took a 21-7 lead at the break.

Both teams battled defensively, holding each other from scoring during most of the third quarter.

Port Isabel managed to get around the Bears’ defense in the last three minutes of the quarter, earning a touchdown from a 42-yard pass from quarterback Isaiah Martinez to Ramirez.

The fourth quarter was a stalemate, as neither team scored.

Port Isabel totaled 197 yards offensively, over La Vernia’s 170 yards. Both teams played a ground-heavy game. The Bears earned 161 yards on 40 rushes, while the Tarpons tallied 154 yards on 37 carries.

Gill led La Vernia in rushing yards, totaling 69 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Colby Skelton managed 48 yards with nine rushes. Levi Andrews gained 33 yards on three carries for the Bears. Landon Richter, Colton Parrish, and Tristan Summy also gained yardage, each on two carries.

Skelton’s pass to Justus Parker earned the Bears their 9 receiving yards.

La Vernia lost 45 yards from five penalties, forfeiting 5 more yards than Port Isabel, which incurred six penalties.

The Bears did manage, however, to recover two of the Tarpons’ three fumbles.

Friday’s win brings La Vernia’s record to 12-1 on the season and earns them a chance to win regionals.

The Bears will face off against the 11-2 Sinton Pirates in Victoria Friday, Dec. 6. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
