City cleans up sewage spill

The city of La Vernia’s public works department advises that approximately 207,000 gallons of raw sewage leaked into the Dry Hollow Creek in La Vernia Dec. 3, caused by paper and debris that had collected in the sewer system.

According to a statement issued by the city, utility crews discovered an overflowing manhole along the Dry Hollow Creek at approximately 8:30 a.m. that day. Crews dammed off the creek and the representatives of the San Antonio River Authority attended to help with the clean up efforts. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was notified and attended to assess the situation; no damage to aquatic life was found, due to the creek being dry.

City works crews dammed off the creek and flushed it with clean water back into the sewer system until all the debris was removed. Field tests were run to ensure all sewage was removed from the dry creek bed. Crews continued to follow up over the following 48 hours to ensure all sewage had been removed.
