Bears finish second in Goliad
The varsity Bear basketball team celebrates its second-place finish at the Goliad Tournament last weekend. Colby Sims and Austin Pickens were named to the All-Tournament team.

GOLIAD It was another good stretch for the varsity Bear basketball team last week, as La Vernia went 5-1 with a win over Jourdanton and a second-place showing at the Goliad Tournament.

On Dec. 10, the Bears played host to the Jourdanton Indians, but made quick work of the visiting squad. Led by Austin Pickens with 22 points, and Colby Sims with 19, the Bears ran over the Indians from the opening tipoff. La Vernia held a 19-6 lead after the first period of play, and was on top 36-11 at the break.

Things were closer during the third stanza, but La Vernia still held a 16-12 scoring advantage and led by 29 going into the fourth. The Bears shut down the Indians in the fourth, outscoring Jourdanton 14-0 and locking up an impressive 66-23 victory.

Two days later, La Vernia made the drive to Goliad to compete in tournament play. The Bears were paired with the Karnes City Badgers to start things off, but once again had little in the way of resistance. Sims led La Vernia with 24 points, as the Bears outscored Karnes City 16-5 in the first period and led 32-12 at the half. The Bears went on to outscore the Badgers 27-12 in the second half, and picked up the first-round win by the final of 59-24.

Woodsboro was next on the list for La Vernia, but the Eagles were just another set of victims. Sims nearly matched the Woodsboro scoring total on his own with 27 points, and Pickens was good for another 16. The Bears jumped out to a 35-11 lead at the break and won by the final score of 68-28.

The Bears took the court against Luling in their third game of the tournament, and the Eagles gave the Bears a run for their money. After the first period of play, the score was tied at 8-8.

La Vernia caught fire in the second period to outscore Luling by 8 points. Both teams posted 13 points in the third period of play, but the Bears turned things up again in the fourth, and ended things with a 56-42 victory. Sims and Pickens combined for 41 points, and Dalton Rockowitz and Jonathan Garcia were good for another 10.

The bracket put the Bears into a rematch with Karnes City, but the result was pretty much the same the second time around. La Vernia led 13-5 after the first stanza and 25-10 at the break. The Bears cruised to a 47-27 win in the end.

La Vernia advanced to the championship game and was paired with the host team the Goliad Tigers.

La Vernia struggled to keep pace in the first period of play and trailed 14-8 at the buzzer. The Tigers posted another 14 in the second while holding La Vernia to 10, and the score was 28-18 at the break.

La Vernia had its best scoring quarter of the game in the third, as the Bears threw in 17 points. The Tigers scored 15, though, and maintained a solid advantage. Goliad outscored La Vernia 9-4 in the final period of play, and secured a 52-39 win over the Bears.

The Bears finished second in the tournament, and Sims and Pickens were both named to the All-Tournament team.

The Bears were scheduled to be back in action this week against Canyon Lake on Tuesday. La Vernia will then take a short Christmas break before returning to the court Dec. 27 as the team hosts its tournament.
