State-ranked Lady Bears win 2 more

By Robert C. McDonald

LA VERNIA It was another good week for the state-ranked Lady Bear basketball team, as La Vernia added two more district wins to their record, and remain atop the 28-3A standings.

After opening district play with a 6-point win over Sam Houston the week before, the Lady Bears traveled to Somerset last Tuesday evening to take on the Bulldogs. La Vernia has had the ability to jump on teams in the early minutes of games, and that is exactly what the girls did to Somerset. The Lady Bears scored 17 points in the first period of play while holding Somerset to just 6. The 11-point lead was extended a bit further in the second period as La Vernia outscored Somerset 19-16, and took a 36-22 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Bears’ scoring ways continued into the second half, as La Vernia hung another 19 on the board in the third. Somerset managed to outscore La Vernia in the final stanza, but it was only by 4 points, and was nowhere near what the Bulldogs needed to overtake the Lady Bears. When the final buzzer sounded, it was La Vernia with a solid 66-48 victory over the host team.

Jordan Luensmann and Autumn Light led the Lady Bear scoring effort as they posted 18 points and 16 points, respectively. Kelsee Penshorn added another 11. Madison Towns was a beast on the boards as she tallied 15 rebounds, and Luensmann played great defense to the tune of seven steals.

Now with a 2-0 district mark, La Vernia traveled to Pleasanton on Friday to take on the Lady Eagles. Unfortunately for the host team, it quickly became clear that the Lady Bears were on a different level.

La Vernia exploded from the opening whistle and posted a whopping 31 points in the first period alone. The Lady Bears hung another 17 on the board in the second, and enjoyed a significant 48-15 advantage at halftime.

Things were no better for the Lady Eagles in the second half, as La Vernia outscored Pleasanton 24-13 in the third period, and 13-3 in the fourth to lock up a 54-point win by the final score of 85-31.

La Vernia had five players in double digits in scoring, including Light with 21 points and Luensmann with 20. Brooke Martinez scored 13 points, and Penshorn and Mackenzie Ford each added 11 points. Towns led the team in rebounds with seven, and Martinez was one back with six. Luensmann tallied nine steals, while Penshorn and Light were each good for another two.

The win left La Vernia at 3-0 in district play, and improved the team’s overall season record to 20-5. The Lady Bears were scheduled to travel to San Antonio to face Hawkins on Jan. 14, and will be at home against Poteet this Friday, Jan. 17.
