Bears win two more

Bears win two more
A pack of Bear defenders makes life miserable for a Poteet player during the teams’ district meeting last Friday night.

LA VERNIA -- The Bear basketball team added two more notches to their wins column last week after knocking off Hawkins and Poteet to remain unbeaten in District 28-3A play.

La Vernia began the week with a trip to Hawkins on Jan. 14. The Bears were in control of the contest throughout, and had little trouble in securing a solid 57-43 victory.

The Bears got rolling early with 19 first-period points, while at the same time, holding the Hawkins Wolfpack to 9. Things were a bit more even in the second stanza, as La Vernia posted 13 points and Hawkins put up 11. The advantage was still clearly with the Bears, and La Vernia led 32-20 at the break.

La Vernia came out strong in the second half and held Hawkins to just 7 points. At the same time, the Bears tossed in another 15 points, and extended their lead to 20 points. Hawkins outscored La Vernia 16-10 in the final eight minute period, but it was far too little, too late, as the Bears cruised to a 14-point win, 57-43.

Colby Sims led the way with 21 points, followed closely by Austin Pickens with 20 points.

The Bears then closed out the week with a Friday night game at home against the Poteet Aggies. La Vernia made it look easy all night against Poteet, though, and ran away with an 80-18 victory.

Led by Pickens’ 19-point effort, the Bears scored 24 points in the first period and another 17 in the second. The defense was about as good as it gets for the Bears, too, as La Vernia held Poteet to just 8 first-half points. As the buzzer sounded for halftime, it was the Bears with a 41-8 advantage.

Things didn’t get any better for the Aggies in the second half as La Vernia threw up 20 points in the third stanza and another 19 in the fourth. Poteet managed just 10 second-half points in total, and limped home with an 80-18 loss, and an 0-3 record in district play.

Ten different Bear players scored against Poteet. In addition to Pickens’ 19, Zach Jarzombek scored 10 points, Colby Sims and Justus Parker each scored 9, and Tanner Sims and Dalton Rockowitz were each good for another 8.

The win puts the state-ranked Bears at 20-2 overall, and 3-0 in district play. The Bears were slated to face the Sam Houston Hurricanes in San Antonio on Jan. 21, and will be at home Friday, Jan. 24, as the team hosts the Somerset Bulldogs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
