La Vernians rally to aid fire victims
Personnel from the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services and firefighters from four area departments respond to a fully engulfed structure fire Jan. 18 on Oak View Drive near La Vernia.

LA VERNIA Donations of clothing and small household items are being sought to aid a family who lost their home on Oak View Drive southeast of here to a Jan. 18 fire.

Cecelia McCullough and her two teenage children were not at home at the start of the blaze that was reported at 5:30 p.m., said La Vernia Fire Chief Jason Scheel, and the family’s four dogs managed to escape unharmed. Scheel said the fire might have been started when grass was ignited by debris still smoldering from trash that was burned the day before.

In addition to those from La Vernia, firefighters from Eagle Creek, Stockdale, and Sutherland Springs, along with the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services, responded to the scene and remained in service for approximately four hours.

A spaghetti dinner benefit has been set for Feb. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Blue Bird Café on U.S. 87 in La Vernia. All proceeds will go to the McCulloughs.

Donations are being accepted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia (see box right). To contact McCullough directly, call 210-441-9610.
