The La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) held its annual volunteer banquet on Saturday, June 25, with awards presented and members recognized for length of service and more. Awards were given for Responder of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Firefighter of the Year. Members of the department voted for individuals to receive the awards, with the exception of Responder of the Year.

Chief Jason Scheel was recognized as Responder of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Assistant Chief Corey Scheel received the Firefighter of the Year award.

The department also recognized two individuals who have been part of the La Vernia VFD for many years. Selected as life members of the department were “Lil” Don Fey and Fred Shelton.

Many members were recognized for years of service to the department. These include: 20 years, Todd Blackman; 13 years, John Burditt; six years, Andy Friese, Corey Scheel, Doug Scheel, Jason Scheel, Joy Scheel, and Kristina Scheel; five years, Shirley Burditt, Todd Kowalik, and Casey Stewart; four years, Tammy Worthington; three years, George Delgado and Tylar Worthington; two years, Christopher Friedrichs, Robert Perez, Gene L. Roberts Jr., Leslie Roberts, and William Robertson; and one year, Victor Bidwell.
