Community members are invited to celebrate this Independence Day weekend with some good old-fashioned bluegrass music, as the First Baptist Church of Stockale hosts “Church in the Park” in the city park Sunday, July 3, at 10 a.m.
“Blue Creek” will play a set of traditional bluegrass gospel music to help church-goers kick off “Church in the Park.”
Band members Bing Rice, Jacob Frieda, Janice Robinett, Stan Booth, John Gilbert, and Leslie Kirstein combine vocals, guitar, and bass with the banjo and mandolin to form a unique sound for praise and worship.
The band was formed in La Vernia in 2000 and has since played all over Texas at churches, festivals, and family events. The band also sponsors a bluegrass gospel concert at the First Baptist Church in La Vernia every year.
Lead guitarist Bing Rice, said the band gets a lot of inspiration for its music from other bluegrass entertainers, such as “The Stanley Brothers,” Larry Sparks, and “Flatt and Scruggs.” His favorite song to perform is Sparks’ “I Just Want to Thank You, Lord.”
“It’s exciting and a lot of fun to be with the band,” Rice said.
Rice is especially excited for the chance to perform with his band in Stockdale for the Independence Day celebration.
“We are really looking forward to it,” Bing said. “I’m from Stockdale and it’s nice to see everybody.”
