Bears to battle for share of district title

Bears to battle for share of district title
Colby Sims prepares for a free throw during the Bears’ Jan. 31 win over the Hawkins Wolfpack. La Vernia will play its final game of the regular season at home this Friday against the district-leading Sam Houston Hurricanes.

LA VERNIA The state-ranked Bears are currently sitting in second place, but have a chance to tie things up with Sam Houston this week, and to earn a share of the District 28-3A title.

The Bears remain a state-ranked team, currently sitting at No. 20, but are in second place in the district. Sam Houston, the state’s sixth-ranked team, currently holds the No. 1 spot by a game, thanks to the Hurricanes’ 69-64 win over La Vernia on Jan. 21. The Bears will have a chance to get even, though.

With just two games remaining on the regular schedule for La Vernia, the Bears must win them both. The guys were scheduled to face the Aggies in Poteet on Feb. 4, and will finish things out at home this Friday, Feb. 7, against the Hurricanes. If the Bears can get the win, the teams will split the district title and likely flip a coin for playoff seeding. If the Hurricanes win, however, the title is theirs and the Bears will finish second. If the Bears should falter against Poteet, it won’t matter what happens with Sam Houston.

La Vernia did play a pair of district games last week, as well, and picked up two important victories. The team edged Pleasanton by the final score of 53-50, and came out on top of Hawkins, 55-51.

The Bears started strong against Pleasanton on Jan. 28, outscoring the Eagles 18-10 in the first period. The Bears lost a lot of momentum in the second stanza, though, as Pleasanton outscored La Vernia 14-6, making it a 24-24 tie at halftime.

The Bears came back in the third to score 17, while holding the Eagles to 11. Half of the team’s 6-point lead evaporated in the fourth, though, as Pleasanton outscored La Vernia 15-12. It wasn’t enough to get the win for the Eagles, though, and the Bears picked up a 53-50 victory.

Colby Sims led La Vernia with 16 points, followed by Austin Pickens and Tanner Sims with 14 points each.

Next up was Hawkins, but the Bears once again took care of business.

La Vernia jumped out to an 18-14 lead after the first eight minutes of play, but gave up the 4-point lead in the second period, once again going into halftime tied this time at 29-all.

The Bears regained the lead in the third period, but only by a point. La Vernia added a bit of a cushion in the fourth by outscoring Hawkins 12-9, and securing a 55-51 victory.

Pickens was the team’s leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Colby Sims with 19, and Tanner Sims with 6 points.

Remember, the Bears final regular season game will be this Friday, Feb. 7, against the Sam Houston Hurricanes. It will likely be for a share of the district title. Tipoff is set for 7:40 p.m.
