Bears win Floresville tourney
After making a perfect run through the competition to win the Floresville tournament, the La Vernia Bear varsity baseball team takes a moment to celebrate.

FLORESVILLE After finishing third in the Cuero Tournament the week prior, the varsity Bear baseball team was looking for more out of the Floresville Tiger tournament last week. The Bears took care of business en route to a perfect run through the competition, and returned to La Vernia as the tournament champs.

The first team La Vernia faced was Southside, but the Cardinals were no match for the Bears, despite being close during the first three innings.

La Vernia and Southside were tied at 1 run apiece after the first inning of play, but the Bears changed everything in the third by hanging 7 runs on the board. The Cardinals managed to get back 1 run in the fourth, but La Vernia responded by adding another 5 in the fifth. In the end, it was a 13-2 victory for the Bears.

Next up was Lanier, but the Bears never even let the Voks get into this game. La Vernia scored 4 runs in the first inning, 10 in the second, and 3 in the third. Rudy Mendoza picked up the win pitching for the Bears, and he added a pair of strikeouts to his season total. Christian Bruce also pitched an inning and fanned two of the three batters he faced.

The Bears played Holmes on Saturday, and the Huskies were much better competition for La Vernia. Holmes went on top 1-0 in the first inning, and held a 2-1 lead after two innings of play. The Bears stayed steady throughout the game, though, adding runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to lead 4-2 at the end of the fifth. The Bears had a breakout inning the sixth, though, scoring 4 runs, and putting the game out of reach for Holmes. In the end, the final score of 8-2 put the Bears into the championship game with the host team the Tigers.

After a scoreless first inning of play, the Bears got things going in the second inning. Colton Parrish singled to right field to get on base, and Bruce moved him over to second with a bunt down the third-base line. Colby Skelton then laid down another bunt for the Bears, and everyone moved around the bases, leaving the bases loaded with no outs. Dylan Tuten drew a walk to score Parrish, and Bruce moved over to third. Drake Bruner had come in to run for Skelton, and he found himself at second. With a 1-run lead and the bases loaded, Karsten Holm popped out, but managed to score Bruce after he tagged up at third. The Tigers managed to get out of the inning from there, but the damage was done and the Bears led 2-0.

Floresville scratched a run in the top of the third, but the Bears came back to score 2 more in the bottom of the inning. Mendoza scored run No. 3 after reaching base on a fielder’s choice, and Parrish later scored after reaching base on a single and then scoring on an error. The game was all defense from there out, and ended by the final of 4-1, giving the Bears the tournament championship. Anthony Sherrard, Skelton, Tristan Gardner and Justus Parker were each named to the all-tournament team, as well.

The Bears were scheduled to host Cuero March 4, and will be in Somerset later this week to participate in the Bulldogs’ annual tournament.
