Bears earn two more big wins

LA VERNIA -- After a pair of victories over Lytle and Gonzales last week, the state-ranked Bear baseball team improved its overall season record to 13-3, and is looking strong heading into district competition this Friday.

The Bears traveled to Lytle March 12, and promptly handed the Pirates a 10-0 loss. Colby Skelton, Anthony Sherrard, and Austin Preiss teamed up on the mound to toss a no hitter for La Vernia, while Skelton was credited for the win.

The 10-run win began in the top of the first inning, as La Vernia scored 5 runs. Justin Trevino singled to center field to start things off, and then worked his way around to third. He eventually scored on a passed ball at the plate to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Rudy Mendoza then singled to right field, and Colton Parrish hit an infield single to put runners at the corners.

Tristan Gardner came up to the plate, and Parrish stole second on the first pitch. Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Mendoza, and Parrish moved over to third on the out. Christian Bruce then came to the plate and ripped a double to left field scoring Parrish and giving La Vernia a 3-0 lead. Colby Skelton singled to left, and Bruce made his way across home plate for the 4th run of the inning.

The 5th run of the inning came two batters later. Dylan Tuten followed Skelton to the plate. Skelton stole second, and then Cody Cook came in to run. Tuten hit a single to third, and Cook reached third safely with runners at the corners. Tuten stole second on the first pitch to Karsten Holm, and the Bears had runners at second and third. Holm hit a grounder to the shortstop, but Cook ran in, and all runners were safe with a 5-0 lead.

La Vernia went on to score 1 run in the top of the fourth, and 4 more in the fifth. After five innings of play, the game was called by the final score of 10-0.

On March 14, the Bears were back at home to host the Gonzales Apaches. The Bears once again started with some hot sticks, and ran up a 10-0 lead after the first inning of play.

Gonzales threatened in the top of the first inning, but the Apaches stranded two runners as the side was retired. Justus Parker drew a walk to start the bottom of the first, and then moved over to second after the pitcher committed a balk. Trevino also drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Mendoza grounded out, but Cole Lowry drew a walk, and the bases were loaded with just one out. Parker got walked in after Bruce was hit by a pitch, and Gardner drew the Bears’ fifth walk of the inning to score Trevino. Skelton lined out to the shortstop, but Tuten drew a walk to score Lowry. Holm singled to left to score Bruce and Gardner.

The comedy of errors continued for Gonzales, and between the walks, hits, and hit batters, the Bears continued to score runs. Tuten scored on a single by Parker in his second plate appearance of the inning. Parrish came in to run for Holm, and he and Parker scored on an error. Mendoza was hit by a pitch, and Lowry doubled to center field to score Trevino and Colby Sims, who had come in to run for Mendoza. Bruce popped out to the second baseman to end the inning, but not before the damage was done, and La Vernia led 10-0.

Gardner, Tuten, and Parker each scored in the second to give the Bears a 13-0 advantage. Drake Bruner and Sherrard each scored in the third inning to make it a 15-0 game. The Apaches scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth inning. A two-out batter reached base after being hit by a pitch, and was later walked in.

Gonzales had one final at-bat in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t produce any runs. The game was called at that point due to the mercy rule, and Mendoza was credited with the win for La Vernia.

The Bears had most of this week off, but were scheduled to begin district play this Friday, March 21, at home against Poteet. The game is set for 7 p.m. at the La Vernia Sports Complex.
