Flames finish off trucks, trailer
(Marvin Barnes/Contributor) Officials at the scene of a fire on Loop 1604 and U.S. 87 in Lone Oak March 25 gather information as they investigate the cause of the blaze, that left the trailer and two Toyota Tundra trucks completely destroyed.

Two brand-new Toyota Tundra pickup trucks were deemed a total loss March 25, after a flat tire sparked a blaze on a trailer carrying several new trucks along the eastern stretches of Loop 1604 from the Toyota plant.

The trailer containing the trucks caught fire, according to an eyewitness following the rig, on Loop 1604 between U.S. 181 and U.S. 87. The driver stopped at the intersection of Loop 1604 and U.S. 87 near Lone Oak, and tried unsuccessfully to disengage the trailer from the rig, according to Loan Oak Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Wanda McGovern.

Her department, with mutual aid from the St. Hedwig Volunteer Fire Department and the China Grove Volunteer Fire Department, doused the flames. At least two pickup trucks were a total loss, McGovern said, while two others “were burned pretty bad” by the fire, which was “exploding and popping debris into the air,” according to McGovern. The trailer carrying the trucks also was destroyed completely.

McGovern said the driver escaped unharmed.

Rosanne Hughes, spokesperson with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, reported the eyewitness said a blowout on the trailer caused the fire, which occurred about 9 a.m. Tuesday.
