‘City map’ ad calls are misleading

Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce board President Charlene Bridges warns area business owners to use caution if approached about purchasing ads for a “city of La Vernia map.”

Bridges and several other La Vernia business owners have been contacted by Skyline Publishing, based in Peoria, Ill., to place ads to support a map the company said it is publishing for circulation in the area. The caller’s careful phrasing leads business owners to believe the publication is a local product, affiliated with the city of La Vernia.

La Vernia City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu has advised the city is not affiliated with Skyline Publishing on this project or any other.

This same company solicited ads previously from local businesses, including Bridges Rifle Co. and Gunsmithing, for a “Wilson County Relocation Guide.” Bridges said the caller implied a local connection; this was not the case, however.

A caller named Paula recently gave her “...the same spiel I got for the Wilson County Relocation Guide,” Bridges told the La Vernia News. She said she placed a costly ad and then made several calls to ask where the relocation guides would be distributed, with no response. After leaving a message that she was going into a chamber meeting, the company called to advise of a handful of Wilson County locations where the guides were available, and that they were only sent to those places requesting them. Bridges has since received 25 copies.

Skyline Publishing deals in producing local maps and relocation guides, according to its website.

Local organizations, such as the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce, produce business directories and other helpful publications.

The Wilson County News produces an Eagle Ford Directory twice each year, as well as other directories and guides for local businesses and organizations to highlight their products and services.

If you think you are a victim of advertising fraud, contact the Texas attorney general’s office at http://www.oag.state.tx.us; the La Vernia Police Department, 830-779-4541, option 1; or the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, 830-393-2535.
