La Vernia weightlifters qualify for nationals
Koby Bullard (l-r), Brandon Floores, Coach Jason Fiacco, Matthew Montgomery, and Anthony Trevino commemorate their showing at the 2014 IronCat Open in San Marcos.

March 15 proved to be an impressive day for eight local student-athletes. The La Vernia Weightlifting Club traveled to Texas State University to compete in the 2014 IronCat Open.

The IronCat Open is a USA Weightlifting sanctioned meet held to showcase the top lifters in the region. The competition was comprised of two lifts the clean and jerk, and the snatch. This was the first time that La Vernia has fielded a team in this style of weightlifting. La Vernia’s team is comprised of students from the La Vernia school district, ranging in age from 13 to 16.

Qualifying in the women’s 14-15 Division was Shelby Rodriguez with a total of 87 kilograms (192 pounds). In the Men’s 14-15 Division were Parker Beck (115 kilos -- 253 pounds), Travis Puhlmann (155 kilos -- 341 pounds) and Bradley Shussler (162 kilos -- 357 pounds). Qualifying in the Men’s 16-17 Division were Anthony Trevino (168 kilos -- 371 pounds), Brandon Floores (190 kilos -- 419 pounds), Koby Bullard (207 kilos -- 457 pounds), and Matthew Montgomery (225 kilos -- 496 pounds).

The students have qualified for the USA Weightlifting Youth National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. La Vernia will field a national team for the first time in history against the best and strongest lifters from all over the nation.

La Vernia’s Weightlifting Club is not an endorsed sport through La Vernia Independent School District and is currently offering the opportunity for various sponsorships to ensure all the qualified lifters can represent their hometown. Those who are interested in sponsoring the La Vernia Weightlifting Club can contact the team coach Jason Fiacco at jason.fiacco@lvschools.net.
