Dr. Josť H. Moreno has been tapped by the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees as the lone finalist in the district’s search for a new superintendent.

Moreno, currently assistant superintendent of leadership with the San Antonio ISD, was named April 9, during a special meeting of the La Vernia trustees.

According to state law, the district will wait 21 days before Moreno, 42, can be named officially as superintendent. He will replace Dr. Tom Harvey, who resigned last fall. Filling in on an interim basis is Linda Bettin, formerly the superintendent in the Falls City ISD.

The district’s selection process included input from the community via surveys and meetings.

“As part of our selection process, the board provided a survey through the search consultant,” said Dr. Cody Miller, the school board president.

The survey was designed to gather input from all interested community members regarding the characteristics the community felt most valuable in a superintendent, Miller said. Community input sessions also were conducted for the same purpose.

Information from the survey and the face-to-face sessions was presented to the school board and used to develop the qualifications and characteristics the board used to refine its search.

“That ... became the driving force behind the information we requested from all candidates as well as the questions which the board asked during the seven nights of interviews,” Miller said, adding, “Ultimately, we believe that Dr. Moreno is an excellent match to the qualifications and characteristics desired by our community in our next superintendent. The collaboration among the board members and community is something which we are very proud of.”

“I am very pleased to have been selected as the lone finalist,” Moreno said. “I look forward to working with the Board to create and sustain a highly engaged, high-performance culture centered on children, and serving the La Vernia community.”

Moreno is responsible for 29 campuses in San Antonio. He has been a classroom teacher, education consultant, principal, and senior executive director for curriculum and instruction in his 18 years of experience.

The finalist earned his Bachelor of Science in applied learning and development with a bilingual/ESL certification from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science in educational administration from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He holds a doctorate of educational leadership from Lamar University.

Moreno will move to La Vernia with his wife, Regina, and two children, Bianca and Josť III.

The trustees hope to name him as the superintendent during a May 5 board meeting.
