Lady Bears top Wimberley in bi-district playoff battle
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear softball team celebrate after clinching the bi-district championship with a 15-0 win over the Wimberley Lady Texans. La Vernia defeated Wimberley in the first game on April 24, and then split a doubleheader on April 28 en route to the title. The Lady Bears will now face Sealy in the area championship.

It wasn’t quite as easy as they had hoped, but after winning two out of three games against the Lady Texans of Wimberley, the La Vernia Lady Bears have advanced to the area round of softball playoffs.

The bi-district matchup with Wimberley began last Thursday, and the Lady Bears locked up a game-one win by the score of 11-5. After three innings of play, the game was tied at 5-5, but a 6-run effort from La Vernia in the bottom of the fourth led to the 11-5 win.

The big inning got started as Renee Cummings reached on an error. Lauren Burkett and Kailee Wegehaupt then each laid down a bunt, and the bases were loaded with no outs. Alison Saenz came to the plate and ripped a single to center field, allowing Cummings and Burkett to score. Saenz later scored on a sacrifice fly from Johnna Sturm, and the Lady Bear lead was 3. Kara Myrick got on base by way of a fielder’s choice, but later scored on an infield error off the bat of Savannah Martinez. Cummings batted around and drove in Martinez and Morgan Mikes with a single to right field, giving La Vernia an 11-5 advantage a lead they would hold through the remainder of the game.

Because of the Region IV track and field meet in Kingsville, the Lady Bears and Lady Texans delayed their second game by four days, and resumed play on Monday, April 28.

After three scoreless innings, the Lady Bears struck first in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs. Myrick tripled to start off the inning, and then scored on an error to make it a 1-0 game. Mikes hit a two-out single to center field, and Taylor Spoo went in to run for her. Annie Roswell ripped a single to right field and Spoo eventually scored on the play, giving La Vernia a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, Wimberley came back with 1 run in the fifth inning and 2 more in the sixth to secure a 3-2 victory and force a game three.

After a short rest, the two teams went back on the field for the second game of the doubleheader. The teams were scoreless for the first two innings, but La Vernia changed all that in the top of the third.

Burkett doubled to start things off, and then Saenz reached on an error. Myrick hit a single to center field to score Burkett, and Saenz moved over to second. Saenz then stole third, and Myrick stole second. Sturm then hit an infield single, and the Lady Bears had the bases loaded with just one out. Martinez connected with the first pitch she got and drove the ball into center field. She ended up with a double, and cleared the bases for the Lady Bears as Saenz, Myrick, and Sturm all scored.

La Vernia went on to score 7 runs in the fourth inning, and 4 more in the fifth. With a 15-0 lead at the end of the fifth inning, the officials called the game by virtue of the mercy rule, and the Lady Bears celebrated a bi-district victory.

The Lady Bears will now advance to the area championship where they will face Sealy in a one-game playoff. The matchup is set for Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in Cuero.
