The Great Commission

In Matthew 16:15 Jesus charged us with the Great Commission. He said: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” As Christians, it is our responsibility to spread the good news about Jesus to all of our friends, neighbors, and even those we don’t know around the world. Many of us take this charge seriously, sharing God’s Word with everyone we meet. Not all of us can travel the world so we send missionaries in our place who have answered the call.

Some have not taken the charge seriously. In the book of Jonah, God had charged Jonah to go preach to Nineveh. Nineveh was a wicked city and God was ready to destroy it but he was giving them a second chance. That second chance depended upon Jonah’s obedience to God. In Jonah 3:2, God told Jonah: “Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.” This was the second time that God had told Jonah to “go, preach the gospel.” Jonah wanted to do his own thing. He really wanted Nineveh to be destroyed because he had preached to them and they had not listened. So instead of listening to God, he went on a cruise. We all know the story of how he was thrown into the sea because of his disobedience and swallowed by a great fish. Finally, Jonah got the message and made record time as he ran to deliver God’s message.

We may think that is a great story but it is very true in the lives of many today. God has told us to “go into all of the world” just as He told Jonah but we are rebelling. We are not concerned about their salvation; as a matter of fact, we sometimes think that there is no forgiveness for some of them just as Jonah thought of Nineveh. So we ignore the call and go about our lives doing our own thing. It is not up to us to decide if we should preach to them or not. God wants to give everyone a second chance. He wants everyone to be saved and for us to be obedient to His call.
