Olivia Hinojosa wins silver at state
La Vernia junior Olivia Hinojosa is all smiles after winning a silver medal in the 3,200-meter run at the UIL Track & Field State Meet in Austin last weekend.

La Vernia High School junior Olivia Hinojosa capped off the most successful track and field season of her career this past weekend in Austin at the state meet held at the University of Texas.

On Friday morning, the nine state qualifiers in the 3,200-meter run not only squared off against each other, but also had a very hot and muggy morning to contend with. Running with the lead pack for most of the race, Olivia made her move from fifth to third with 150 meters to go. At 60 meters from the finish, she sprinted past Lytle’s Natalie Cortez to claim the silver medal.

“Olivia ran a great race, a very smart race,” said her coach and father, Richard Hinojosa. “She’s a tough and savvy runner, and I couldn’t be happier for her!”

Only defending state champion Kelsie Warren of College Station placed ahead of the Lady Bear distance ace. Last year at state, Warren beat Hinojosa by 50 seconds. This year, the gap was only 14.5 seconds.

“Kelsie is an incredible talent and a tremendous competitor,” Richard said. “College Station moves up to Class 5A next year, and I know she’ll do well.”

Olivia, who holds the La Vernia High School records in both the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs, also had a great second day of competition on Saturday. Running her 1,600-meter debut at state, she placed fifth and reset her personal best by clocking a time of 5:22.64.

“So many people wished me good luck and were praying for me,” Olivia said. “They were in my mind and heart every step of the way. It was also Mother’s Day weekend, and it was my gift to my mom.”
