Pirates to Bears: Walk the plank!
LV SPORTS — The La Vernia Bears head to game 1 of the regional semifinal in Corpus Christi May 23.

La Vernia ISD

Christian Bruce did all he could to give the La Vernia Bears a boost May 23, but it wasn’t enough to get past Hidalgo, and the Bears lost 4-0 in seven innings Friday in game one of a best-of-three region semifinal matchup against the Pirates at the Cabaniss Sports Complex in Corpus Christi.

The Bears were led by a flawless day at the plate by Bruce, who went 2 for 2 against Hidalgo’s pitching. He doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Noguera recorded the win for Hidalgo. He pitched seven shutout innings. Noguera struck out seven, walked four, and gave up five hits.

Anthony Sherrard couldn’t get it done on the mound for the Bears, taking the loss. In his seven innings, he walked one, struck out six, and allowed four runs.

Hidalgo never trailed, after scoring one run in the fourth on an RBI single by Ruiz.

Also earning hits for La Vernia were Justus Parker, Colton Parrish, and Colby Skelton, with one hit each. Bruce also stole a base in the contest.

On Saturday in game two, the Bears dropped a 5-3 game to Hidalgo despite the efforts of Rudy Mendoza.

Mendoza followed Bruce’s lead from Friday, doing his level best in game two of the matchup in Corpus Christi. Despite their efforts, the Bears fell 5-3 to the Pirates, ending La Vernia’s 2014 baseball campaign.

It was a good day at the plate for Mendoza, who went 2 for 3, drove in one, and scored one run. He singled in the first inning and homered in the sixth inning.

Wilburn got the win for Hidalgo. He allowed three runs over the seven innings. Wilburn struck out five, walked three, and gave up six hits.

Mendoza ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He lasted just four innings, walked one, struck out five, and allowed three runs.

In the top of the first, the Bears grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Mendoza started the rally for the Bears with a single. Colton Parrish singled, plating Justus Parker.

After posting one run in the second, the Bears again scored one in the sixth. In the second, the Bears scored on an RBI single by Colby Sims, bringing home Colby Skelton.

The game was never in doubt after the third, however, as Hidalgo scored three runs on an error and an RBI single by Noguera.

The Bears put up a fight in the best-of-three series, yet could not move on from the fourth round of the playoffs this year.

Reaching the region semifinal was a great accomplishment for the Bears, and they are sure to have a competitive team again next year.
