Sara Hill signs with Concordia University Texas
La Vernia senior Sara Hill is all smiles after signing her letter of intent to attend school and play volleyball for the Tornados of Concordia University Texas in Austin. Hill is joined by her parents, Doug and Estella, as well as (back, from left) SA Xtreme Volleyball Club Director Maggie Lakata; Lady Bear Head Coach Theresa Reyes; her brother, Ryan; and La Vernia Volleyball Club Director Hillary Moehrig.

La Vernia senior Sara Hill made things official last month, as she signed her letter of intent to become the newest member of the Concordia Tornados volleyball team.

Family, friends, teammates, and members of the La Vernia staff were all present May 19, as Hill signed with Concordia University Texas in Austin. The talented senior said she considered other schools, including East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, but chose Concordia after her visit.

“I loved the campus,” she said. “The academics are good, the volleyball program is very good. It just felt right. Everything felt right.”

Hill said that her club coach, Maggie Lakata, helped connect her with Concordia. Lakata thought Hill would be a good fit, and contacted the school on her behalf. Concordia’s coach came down for a visit, and things just sort of worked out from there.

While playing volleyball for the Tornados is certainly high on her list, Hill is also particularly concerned with her education. She plans to major in biology, and then attend medical school to pursue her goal of becoming a pediatrician. Hill said one of her goals is to maintain a high GPA, helping to retain academic scholarships, and to help her with medical school.

Hill admits she will miss her parents, her church, and the community. She is an active member of her church youth group, and enjoys working with younger children. She also sings, and enjoys just hanging out with her friends.

Hill admits there have been a lot of great memories for her at La Vernia, and she is sure to hold on to them. When it comes to volleyball, she said her senior season will always be special.

“We had a great season,” she said. “The girls all got along very well. It was a great team.”

Playing volleyball with her new team is the main reason she chose Concordia, though, and Hill is excited for the opportunity. She also played basketball and softball until she got to high school, but her passion has always been with volleyball -- the sport she has been playing since she was 5 years old. She isn’t ready to give it up just yet.

“I love the game,” she said. “I’m looking forward to playing at the college level. I’m really excited about it.”

Hill had a great senior season, earning 291 kills through 117 games. She also had 119 digs during that stretch.
