Strive to show gentleness

What do you think of when you hear the word “gentle” or “gentleness”? Do you maybe think of a teacher that you had that was so gentle in his/her presentation and you learned so much from them in many ways, including how to live a gentle life? Or maybe it was your parent(s) that showed a gentle spirit in everything and brought so much joy into your life? How about that special grandparent? Were you blessed to have a very gentle grandparent?

Let’s look to the scriptures on this thought of gentleness. Let’s examine our lives and see how we can show gentleness to those around us, always sharing the way of Christ in our lives. We can begin with Proverbs 15:1 with the words, “a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” We have a choice here. We can respond with gentleness or with wrath. Which should be chosen? Let’s look to the example of Christ with the words from Matthew 11:29-30, “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” What a beautiful thought of being gentle in the way that Christ set the example for us.

In 1 Peter 3:15, we can claim the following words and promise: “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” What a beautiful thought. Let’s always show gentleness and respect. “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” These words are found in James 3:17 and outline a beautiful and thoughtful way to be gentle. And in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-5 we read: “Love is patient and kind, love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way, it is not irritable or resentful.” When we truly show love to those around us, we do it with a gentle spirit.

Let’s strive to turn to these words from our Heavenly Father in His Holy Word and always strive to show gentleness to those around us. Let’s seek His face in our every action, in all our words, and strive to follow Our Lord and Savior in all things.
