Be strong in the power of His might

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:10-12

As Jesus finished a day of ministering to the crowds, He told His disciples to take Him to the other side of the sea. They quickly boarded the boat, and Jesus, who was very tired, fell asleep. They all knew that this sea could turn violent without notice but at the Master’s request, they set sail.

It wasn’t long when they found themselves in the middle of the storm and fear gripped their heart. They did everything they could without waking Jesus, but the storm was more than they could handle. It was a matter of life and death, so they went to Jesus and woke Him from His sleep. At Jesus’ command, the storm died down and the sea was calm again.

Our Christian walk is much the same way, when we decide we are going to serve Jesus with all of our heart and “come on board,” we have the assurance that Jesus is with us as He was with the disciples in that boat. Just because we are in the boat does not mean that it will be smooth sailing. As a matter of fact, life is full of ups and downs and storms, but that should not change our faith and trust in God. It is in those times that we should stand on l John 4:4, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” At times it may seem like we won’t make it, but we will because our life is in Jesus.

When faced with adversity, we seem to run to Jesus forgetting that He has given us power to overcome everything in life. Just as Jesus spoke to the sea and the storm died, He has given us the authority to do the same. We can speak to our situations and they will bow down to the name of Jesus. That does not mean that we rely on ourselves, we are relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us, comfort us, and help us always. Jesus will always be there when we cannot stand on our own but He wants us to be strong in the power of His might.
