La Vernia Little Leaguers take game to state
La Vernia Intermediate Little League 50/70 team members gather in prayer during their state championship appearance in Houston this past weekend.

It certainly wasn’t the way the team wanted to end its season, but after dropping a pair of games to Tyler in the Little League State Tournament, the Intermediate division team from La Vernia is out of World Series contention.

The team of 12- and 13-year-olds from La Vernia earned a spot in the state tournament earlier this month, after defeating the team from Freeport in a best-of-three series. The victory sent the boys to Houston, where they joined the teams from Tyler, Kountze, and Norhill in a double-elimination tournament.

Competing at the Post Oak Little League Fields in Houston, the team from La Vernia suffered an early setback on July 12, as it dropped a game to Tyler. On the same day, Norhill handed Kountze a first-game loss.

La Vernia and Kountze squared off in the second game, and La Vernia came up with a big win. The second-round loss sent the team from Kountze home, and kept La Vernia alive in the tournament. Meanwhile, Tyler defeated Norhill to remain on top.

La Vernia was put into a rematch with Tyler on July 14, but the game ended with a loss for the Wilson County team, and the boys’ season was complete.

Tyler and Norhill were scheduled to play July 15 for the state title, with the winner advancing to the regional championship later this week in Colorado. The Little League World Series will be played July 29-Aug. 4 in Livermore, Ca.

La Vernia team members are Weston Blaylock, Chris Johnson, Josh Ruiz, Jimmy Elrod, Kaleb Collins, Dawson Friedrick, Jake Campbell, Nolan Henkes, Tyler Casey, Keegan Holm, Colby Neil, Walker Ring, and Orin Jackson.

Congratulations, La Vernia, on a great 2014 season!
