Let go and let God do the driving

Video to come

The La Vernia News welcomes the return of Karen Weiss to the church page, writing for the First Baptist Church.

Sometimes when it seems like the worst possible time for something to happen, at least from our personal point of view, God seems to show us this is the best possible time for it. And that is when we must fully trust Him, listen for His leading, and most of all, be prepared to work for Him. Show up and step up.

After learning last week that our pastor of 17 years, which is a lifetime for some of our younger members, is resigning, emotions began to run very high. Lots of tears, some brief anger even, and finally acknowledgement that Pastor Dave is indeed a man after God’s own heart and bidding for his life, seemed to settle on us. It’s very hard to let go of people you love so dearly, especially when they have been there for you through your darkest hours. Now our goal is to show our pastor that he has led us in the right direction and our long-term goal remains to continue to reach out to all who need Christ. We are richly blessed with godly leaders and many ordained ministers, our leadership is strong and we must continue to support them and our church membership.

Vacation Bible School started Sunday evening. We have evening VBS so it can be a family affair. Each evening begins with a free meal so the ladies don’t have to worry about dinner. There are classes for everyone, nursery through 12th grade. Then there is the adult 13th grade. A fantastic opportunity for adults to study and share knowledge about the same things the children are learning. When you can get 42 adults together on a summer Sunday evening rest assured something good is happening. And VBS runs through Thursday evening maybe you can come one or two nights.

I, personally, know there are times in life when you experience great losses and your pathway takes such a bend you can’t see what direction you need to go. Sometimes we just coast along driving slowly and finding our way as it comes into view, all the time knowing we’ve got Christ with us, and we rest in the shelter of his wings. But there comes a day when it’s time to let Him do the driving and we need to crawl into the back seat. He will take us to amazing places we never dreamed of going, show us things we passed by every day and never noticed. He will show us people who need to be encouraged just as many of you have encouraged me in the last two years. And all we have to do is keep our hearts filled with His love and energy and let Him lead.

So if you’ve been driving aimlessly through life, point your wheels to First Baptist Church of La Vernia next Sunday. We have two services on Sunday mornings, 8:10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. We would love to see you there.

Have a great week and give God the glory!
