Convicted in faith

“é Remain faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev. 2:10).

We are called, as disciples, as baptized Christians, to go out and spread the Good News. And we do ...or think we do.

But if today, you were to be arrested and charged with being a follower of Christ, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

We live our faith comfortably here in the United States, largely without persecution. But many have died for simply believing in Christ as the Son of God. Many continue to be persecuted. Christians in Iraq are fleeing as strife and unrest continue there, and a young mother was imprisoned and sentenced to death in Sudan for refusing to denounce her Christian faith and gave birth to her second child in captivity. We give praise to you, loving Lord, that pleas from around the world were heard; she was released and she and her family have since left Sudan to live in the United States.

Some Christians must practice their faith in secret. Many still die or are imprisoned for holding fast to their faith.

Are we supporting these brave souls, at least in prayer? As we worship in our full churches on Sunday, do we spare a thought for Iraqi Christians, who will not go to their churches for fear of bombs or persecution? Do we appreciate the luxury of walking openly into our churches, without having to sneak in to worship?

We can pray in public, with the only repercussions being an apology to an atheist, to stave off a possible lawsuit.

Dear Jesus, suffering Jesus, help us remember and support those who suffer for their faith in you. Help us, also, to have the courage to “remain faithful until death” that we may receive “the crown of life.”
