Police investigate multi-vehicle crash
REUBEN GARCIA Late-afternoon rush-hour traffic squeezes through a stretch of U.S. 87 in La Vernia Aug. 7 following a multi-vehicle crash in front of Witte’s Bar-B-Q & Steak House and the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department.

Charges are pending following an Aug. 7 multi-vehicle crash that snarled traffic on U.S 87 here.

According to Sgt. Danny Pitts of the La Vernia Police Department, 43-year-old Robert Rangel of Brady was driving a 2002 Ford F-350 northbound on U.S. 87 at 5:30 p.m. The vehicle was towing a gooseneck trailer that was hauling a load of trees. Rangel’s truck struck the rear of a northbound 2013 Toyota Tundra driven by 33-year-old Michelle Zuniga of La Vernia. She was stopped to make a left turn into the Witte’s Bar-B-Q & Steak House restaurant, Pitts said.

Rangel’s truck and trailer came to rest in front of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department while Zuniga’s vehicle was pushed into southbound traffic. Pitts said the Tundra then struck a 2012 Ford F-150 being driven southbound on U.S. 87 by 42-year-old Robert White. The Tundra bounced off that vehicle and struck a 2013 Honda CRV being driven south on U.S. 87 by 40-year-old Susan Frost of San Antonio.

The La Vernia Emergency Medical Services, La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department, and an off-duty Poth Police Department officer assisted police at the scene, Pitts said. There were no reported injuries.
