Learn to feed each other

I read a story in Chicken Soup for the Soul that went something like this.

A man was having a conversation with the Lord and he asked, “What is the difference between Heaven and Hell?” the Lord said, “Follow me and I’ll show you the difference.” They entered a room where a large pot of stew sat in the middle, there were people sitting around with spoons, which had such long handles that the people couldn’t get the stew to their mouths. They were all crying and moaning from lack of food, the suffering was terrible.

They walked on and after climbing several flights of stairs they entered another room. The setting looked much like the first room. There was the pot of stew in the middle and all the people sitting around had the same spoons with the very long handles. The man asked the Lord, “Why are all these people happy and smiling so pleasantly?” The Lord said, “My son, here in Heaven we have learned to feed each other.”

I believe that is what the body of Christ, the church, is all about. Feeding each other. Sometimes trying to live our lives without nourishment from the scriptures is like trying to eat with one of those extra long-handled spoons. It’s not uncommon to get so bogged down in our fast paced lives that we read words but miss the message when we try to hurry through our daily devotional. We need the encouragement and fellowship with others who experience the same fast pace but are able to take the message to heart and in turn share it with others.

It reminds me of God telling Ezekiel to, “open your mouth and eat what I give you.” So Ezekiel ate the scroll of a book that was unrolled before him, and he said it was like honey in sweetness. And God told him to “receive into your heart all My words that I speak to you, and hear with your ears.” This was not solely for Ezekiel’s benefit but it was to enable him to share it with others.
