Cross-country team shines in SA
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear cross-country team celebrate their second-place team finish at the UTSA Ricardo Romo Cross-Country Invitational last Saturday. Senior Olivia Hinojosa led the team with her second-place individual finish.

At the UTSA Ricardo Romo Cross-Country Invitational, the teams from La Vernia had another strong showing.

In the girls varsity division, the Lady Bears impressed by finishing second to the defending regional champs from Bandera. Olivia Hinojosa placed second in a strong field of runners, leading the Lady Bears to their second-place finish from among a 20-team field.

“All of our girls ran very well,” said Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we are really gelling as a team. Our goal from day one has been to get to state as a team for the fourth year in a row, and we believe our chances are looking very good!”

The La Vernia boys were equally impressive, as they finished third behind two top-10 Class 4A teams. The boys field had 27 total teams. Andrew Cribb was tops for the Bears with his sixth-place finish.

“We’re getting better every week, and we believe we’ll still be competing the second Saturday in November,” Hinojosa said.

The next meet on the schedule for La Vernia is the Round Rock McNeil Invitational. The teams will travel to Old Settlers’ Park in Round Rock on Saturday, Oct. 4, to compete in the meet.
