Lady Bears enjoy winning week

Last week was a good one for the Lady Bear volleyball team, as it knocked off Yoakum and Gonzales, both in straight games on the road.

The Lady Bears started things off on Oct. 7 with a trip to Yoakum. The Lady Bulldogs weren’t much of a threat to La Vernia, and the Lady Bears earned a comfortable 25-19 win in the best-of-five series. In the second game of the match, the Lady Bears repeated their success, and once again won by the final of 25-19. It wasn’t as easy in the third game, however, and Yoakum threatened to steal one away. The Lady Bears were able to remain focused, though, and picked up a narrow win by the score of 25-23. It was the third straight win of the night, and gave La Vernia the match victory.

Victoria Elizondo and Mackinley Zimmerle led the team at the net, as they tallied 8 kills and 7 kills, respectively. The duo also combined for 5.5 blocks up front. Morgan Burns led the team with 18 assists, while Audrey Mayes earned another 14. Christa Reyes led the team in digs with 11, and Alisen Saenz was good for another 10.

On Oct. 10, the Lady Bears made a trip to Gonzales to square off with the Lady Apaches. La Vernia earned a solid 25-19 win in the first game, but Gonzales was better in the second. The Lady Bears still came away with a 25-21 win, but the Lady Apaches were making up ground. In the third game, however, the Lady Bears ran away with things, as La Vernia rolled to an easy 25-15 victory. It was another straight-games victory, and the team deserved to celebrate.

Zimmerle led the team in kills with 9, followed by Elizondo with 6. Burns had 17 assists. Kiersten Muenster had 4 service aces for the Lady Bears, and Brianna Dear led the defensive effort with 9 digs. Zimmerle had 4 blocks, Kim De La Torre threw up three blocks, and Elizondo registered 2.5.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to host Navarro on Oct. 14, and will travel to Cuero this Friday, Oct. 17, to battle the Lady Gobblers. District play will end Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Canyon Lake High School.
