Crash claims La Vernia man

LA VERNIA -- The Texas Department of Public (DPS) Safety Highway Patrol is investigating an Oct. 13 crash on F.M. 2772 that claimed the life of a La Vernia man.

According to DPS Sgt. Lynn Floyd, Wilson County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Richard “Dickie” Jackson pronounced Troy Alan Calhoun, 24, of La Vernia dead at the scene.

Floyd said that witnesses reported seeing Calhoun driving a Pontiac passenger car at a high rate of speed west on F.M. 2772. At approximately 7:03 p.m., Calhoun allegedly passed a vehicle in a no-passing zone, before taking evasive action to avoid an oncoming vehicle while rounding a curve. He lost control of the Pontiac before striking a utility pole. The impact caused Calhoun, who was not wearing a seat belt, to be ejected from the vehicle.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, Floyd said.

In an unrelated incident, DPS is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Oct. 11 just north of the Wilson-Guadalupe county line. Just before 8 p.m., 57-year old bicyclist Rodney Casares was struck on F.M. 775 near Blue Creek Road by a 2000 Toyota Celica driven by 24-year-old Roxanne Scarlet Cribbs of San Antonio.

According to DPS Trooper Cory Holmes, Casares, who lived on Blue Creek Road, was riding home from his job at the Pizza Hut/Wings Street restaurant on U.S. 87 in La Vernia. He was not wearing a helmet or reflective clothing and died at the scene from his injuries.

Cribbs reported that she was en route to Austin and unfamiliar with the area. As a result, she allegedly was preoccupied with a GPS device and did not see Casares before the impact occurred.
