For your love

An old Yardbirds song written by Graham Gouldman keeps running through my head:

“For your love, for your love,

“I would give the stars above.

“For your love, for your love,

“I would give you all I could.”

It started Sunday, when our guest priest, the Rev. Robert Weiss, said, “Do you know God’s crazy about you? He doesn’t just love you. He’s absolutely crazy about you! Do you believe it?”

And I got to thinking.

What’s the craziest thing we’ve ever done for love?

A friend and her husband recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. She shared on Facebook the crazy thing he did to get her attention. He painted “I love you” with her name on an overpass along the route she took to work.

Crazy, right? He could’ve been hit by a vehicle as he painted, or fallen off the overpass, or been arrested on a graffiti charge -- any number of things. Plus, she wasn’t the only driver on the road. All those people driving the highway would see it. He put his heart right out there in public, on the highway. Out of his great love for her.

And 30 years later, they’re still crazy about each other.

And God is crazy about us. About you. About me.

Crazy. He doesn’t just love us. He’s crazy about us.

He so wants the best for the object of his love -- humanity -- that he’s time and again done crazy things to say, “I love you.”

He parted the Red Sea for Moses and the Israelites. He brought the Israelites out of the desert into a new land, and delivered Jericho into the hands of Joshua and the Hebrew army.

He made a humble shepherd into a king to govern the Israelites, and promised a savior to the people He’d safeguarded and delivered time and again.

What would He not do out of love?

He’s so crazy about you and me, that He did something so unthinkable that it stops me in my tracks.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

His only Son.

We know the story, how the babe was born in Bethlehem, how shepherds heard the news and traveled to the stable, how angels sang of His coming.

And we know the rest of the story, too, how He gave his life on a cross.

For you. For me.

Crazy, right?

“I would give you all I could,” the Yardbirds sang. “For your love.”

God is crazy about us.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done -- for His love?

It’s a crazy time, these weeks leading up to our celebration of God’s greatest gift. There are so many things clamoring for our time and attention -- decorating to do, gifts to buy, programs to practice for, parties to attend, people to see.

What would be really crazy, with all this stuff going on, would be making time to spend a little quiet time with our loving God, whose birth into our lives and hearts is the only reason for the season.

Because He’s crazy about you!
