Trustees act to keep junior high kids cool

The La Vernia Independent School District board of directors has approved the purchase of new air conditioning units for the junior high school. The decision was made during the board’s Dec. 8 meeting.

Five Trane heating, ventilation and air conditioning units, which cost $50,173.45, will replace 15-year-old units at the junior high school’s main building.

The board also approved minor updates to the district’s local testing policy. The added wording states, “The type of accelerated instruction is based on the individual student’s needs as developed and assigned by the grade placement committee.”

The board renewed its discussion of granting stipends but took no action.

“A final agreement was not reached, and [the subject] will be revisited during January’s board meeting,” said Dr. Jose Moreno, district superintendent.

The meeting featured a Christmas program performed by English and dual-language pre-kindergarten classes.

“I am pleased that our school board is so focused on academics and their belief in our early-childhood programs,” Moreno said. “It was exciting to see our teachers and students in action.”
