Bears beat Pirates ahead of Christmas break
LVISD Senior Dalton Rockowitz (32) goes up for 2 points during La Vernia’s 69-50 win over Poth last week.

Their season hasn’t been perfect far from it, in fact but with an impressive 69-50 win over a very good Poth Pirate basketball team last Friday night, the La Vernia Bears went into Christmas break on a high note.

The Bears were 2-9 going into the game, and have had their share of struggles this season. Poth, on the other hand, was sitting at 11-3, and had several impressive wins under its belt. By the end of the night, however, things were looking a bit different for each team.

La Vernia jumped all over the Pirates in the first period of play, and led 20-10 at the buzzer. Poth rallied back in the second to nearly match the Bears point-for-point, but La Vernia led 34-23 at the break.

Just as they had done in the first period, the Bears outpaced the Pirates and opened up their lead a bit further. La Vernia dropped in 16 points during the third eight-minute session, while Poth scored just 10. With only one stanza remaining, it was all La Vernia at 50-33.

Led by Cole Harris and Brock Nelson, the Pirates had their best scoring period of the night in the fourth period, as Poth hung another 17 points on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Bears posted another 19 points, and cruised to a 69-50 win.

Harris led the Pirates with 17 points on the night, followed by Nelson with 13. Heath Dunn was good for another 9 points, and Luis Gonzales scored 7.

For La Vernia, it was Tanner Sims who had the hot hand last Friday, as he scored 30 points in front of the home crowd. Dalton Rockowitz tacked on another 12 points, and Jonathan Garcia was good for another 8 points.

The win lifts La Vernia to 3-9 on the season, as the team moves into the Christmas break. The Bears are scheduled to compete in the Boerne Tournament beginning Monday, Dec. 29. The team will begin district play on Friday, Jan. 2.
