Lady Bears go 3-2 on final week of 2014
Players look on as La Vernia’s Autumn Light challenges a Navarro player for the ball under the rim. Navarro defeated La Vernia 67-36 in the Lady Bears’ district opener.

With three wins and a pair of losses last week, the Lady Bear varsity basketball team closed out 2014, and moved into 2015 and district play.

La Vernia went 3-1 in tournament action to close out 2014. The Lady Bears started by knocking off Southwest 58-48, and then Del Rio by the score of 49-48.

Against the Southwest Lady Dragons, the Lady Bears held a 16-10 lead after the first period of play, but clung to a 26-25 advantage at the half. The lady Dragons outscored La Vernia in the third to take a 1-point lead into the final stanza, but a great performance by the Lady Bears in the fourth period gave them a 10-point win.

Against Del Rio, La Vernia was all over the Lady Rams in the first period, outscoring their opponents 21-8. Del Rio came back in the second period to score 11, while holding La Vernia to just 3 points. At halftime, the score was 24-19.

La Vernia outscored Del Rio 12-8 in the third, but the Lady Rams nearly pulled off a comeback, scoring 21 points in the fourth period, while keeping the Lady Bears at 13 points ...just enough for the 1-point win.

The scoring trends continued against Hondo, as La Vernia outscored its opponent in the first period, but then had a let down in the second. As the teams went for the locker rooms, it was Hondo on top, 34-24.

The Lady Bears roared back in the third and fourth periods, though, outscoring Hondo 18-13 in the third and 20-15 in the fourth, sending the game into overtime. In overtime, La Vernia outscored Hondo 11-8 to seal the 73-70 victory.

Against Boerne, La Vernia led 20-15 after the first period of play, and held a 34-32 lead over the Greyhounds. Boerne took the lead in the third period, though, outscoring La Vernia 16-7. The Greyhounds held on to the lead, outscoring La Vernia 15-14 in the fourth period, and securing a 63-55 win.

On Jan. 2, the Lady Bears began the New Year with their first district game of the season, against Navarro.

As in the other games, La Vernia held the lead after the first eight minutes by the score of 13-10. Navarro came back in the second period, though, outscoring the Lady Bears 14-8, and taking a 24-21 lead into halftime.

In the third period, Navarro was all over La Vernia, outscoring the Lady Bears 19-5. The Lady Panthers continued to dominate against the Lady Bears in the fourth period, as well. Navarro outscored La Vernia 24-10, and cruised to an easy 67-36 win over the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to host Cuero on Jan. 6, and will be in Wimberley this Friday, Jan. 9.
