Four students safe after bus accident

The investigation continues into an accident involving a La Vernia Independent School District bus transporting students Jan. 6 as they returned from the Christmas break to begin the new semester.

The bus, carrying four primary and intermediate school-aged students, veered off the road on a 90-degree curve on C.R. 348 Tuesday morning, hitting a gate, said Sgt. Danny Pitts of the La Vernia Police Department. His department, along with representatives of the La Vernia EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, attended the scene of the accident, which occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m.

Dr. Jose Moreno, district superintendent, also headed to the accident, located off F.M. 1346 northwest of the city.

“Student safety is our priority,” Moreno said, adding that the incident would receive a thorough investigation. Parents of all the students involved were informed immediately, per district policy.

He and Pitts confirmed there were no major injuries; all were treated and released at the scene. The students then were transported via another district bus to their respective campuses.

The students also received a checkup by the school nurses upon arriving at school, as a precaution, Moreno said.

“And I visited each of them in their classrooms,” he added. One child had bumped her face during the accident. “She was smiling in class!” Moreno said.

According to Pitts, the driver of the 2004 International school bus is 65-year-old Lyman Lyro of St. Hedwig.

Lyro has been with the district for about five years, Moreno confirmed, and has no prior accidents on record.

The reason for the bus veering off the roadway was unknown as of press time. DPS will continue its investigation.

“He will not be driving until we get all we need,” Moreno said, confirming this is standard district procedure following such an incident. “The DPS will give us their report and we’ll take it from there.”
