Soccer teams begin inaugural season
LVISD Members of the La Vernia Bears soccer team celebrate their third-place finish at the Pleasanton tournament last week. The Bears start their first-ever season with a 1-1 record.

With the start of the New Year came the start of a new season for La Vernia. This is the first year for the high school to field soccer teams, and both the Bears and Lady Bears were in action last week.

The girls hosted Kerrville Tivy last Friday, and the Lady Bears ended their first-ever game with a 1-0 win over the Lady Antlers. Rachael Goddard scored the goal for La Vernia in its debut.

For the boys, their first season began in tournament play in Pleasanton.

On Friday, the Bears took on the Boerne Greyhounds, and scored 2 goals, but eventually fell by the final of 4-2. Soul De La Torre scored the Bears’ first-ever goal, and his brother, Miguel De La Torre, scored La Vernia’s second-ever goal.

On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Bears returned for another day of tournament play. La Vernia took on the host team of Pleasanton, and ran away with a 4-0 win over the Eagles. This was of course the team’s first-ever win.

Fernando Ayon scored two goals for the Bears, Soul De La Torre scored one, and Giovanny Cruz was good for the fourth. Coach Chris Taylor said that players Brayden Johnson, Chewy Picaso, Nolan Jackson, Kyle Douglas, Devin Goddard, Mathew Munoz, and Goalie Ethan Dennis were all defensive standouts against the Eagles.

The 1-0 Lady Bears were scheduled to face the Floresville Jaguars on Jan. 13, and will be in San Antonio this Friday, Jan. 16, to take on St. Anthony. For the 1-1 Bears, their season continues at home this week, as they host the Floresville Tigers on Jan. 13, and Palacios on the 16th.
