School board OKs consultant contracts
WILLIAM J. GIBBS JR. La Vernia High School band director Stacy Clark introduces the La Vernia Independent School District board of trustees to representatives of the district’s All Area and All Regional bands during the Jan. 12 board meeting.

The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees has authorized the district’s administration to enter into two consulting contracts.

At its Jan. 12 meeting, the board approved an agreement with the Texas Association of School Boards for a staffing study. According to Superintendent Josť Moreno, La Vernia ISD will pay $14,500 plus travel expenses for the two- to three-month-long analysis of staff in the areas of instruction and administration, coaches, special education staff, facilities management, and more. The findings will factor into planning of the district’s 2015-16 budget.

The board also approved a contract with Foundation Innovation, which will help the district over the next year to establish the La Vernia Education Foundation. The organization, once established, will perform similarly to other area school foundations. Moreno said it will award “innovative teacher grants” that will fund programs and initiatives outside the scope of the regular budget. For its assistance, Foundation Innovation will be paid $18,500 plus travel expenses.

In other business, the board:

¢Approved the continuance of the district’s retainer agreement with the law firm of Walsh, Anderson, Gallegos, Green & Trevi’o, which will cost $1,000 per year

¢Approved the athletic department’s stipend structure for the 2014-15 school year, as discussed during the board’s Jan. 5 workshop.

¢Ordered an election for trustee places 5, 6, and 7, each with a four-year term. The election, which will be held in conjunction with the city of La Vernia, is set for May 9.
