Soccer teams experience wins, struggles
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear soccer team battle with the Floresville Jaguars during non-district play.

Still early in their first season of play, the Bear and Lady Bear soccer teams of La Vernia High School are building as teams ahead of the district seasons set to begin mid-February.

After beginning the season with a win and a tie, the La Vernia Lady Bear soccer team had a rough go in Pleasanton last weekend, dropping a trio of games.

La Vernia started off with a game against Leander on Friday, but fell by the final score of 9-0. The Lady Bears did better on Saturday, scoring goals in each of their games against Floresville and El Paso Austin, but fell by the final scores of 4-1 and 6-1, respectively.

The 1-3-1 Lady Bears are scheduled to compete in tournament play again this weekend as they travel to Kerrville for the Tivy tournament.

In boys play, the Bears had a pair of games at home last week. La Vernia hosted Floresville on Tuesday, and then Palacios on Friday.

In the Bears’ game with Floresville, La Vernia earned a solid 5-3 win. Miguel De La Torre led the team with two goals, and the Bears also got goals from Gianni Avril, Soul Cruz, and Fernando Ayon.

On Jan. 16, the Bears took on Palacios, and sent the visiting team packing with a 3-0 defeat. Chewy Picaso, Rudy Cruz, and Kyle Douglas each scored goals for La Vernia during the win.

The 3-1 Bears were set to host St. Anthony on Jan. 20, and to face Wimberley on Jan. 23. Unfortunately, La Vernia’s game with the Wimberley Texans has been canceled.
