Lady Bears earn two district wins
Junior guard Autumn Light creates some space between herself and a Yoakum defender. The Lady Bears knocked off the Lady Bulldogs, 36-24.

With wins last week over Yoakum and Gonzales, the La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team improves to 5-3 in District 26-4A play, and remains in third place in the standings behind Navarro and Wimberley.

The Lady Bears hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Yoakum on Jan. 20, and ended the night with a 36-24 win.

The first half of the game started a bit slower than normal for La Vernia, as the Lady Bears scored just 9 points. Fortunately, Yoakum only scored 11 points, and the lead was simply one basket.

Things picked up a bit in the second half, though. While the Lady Bears managed just another 9 points, they held the Lady Bulldogs to 8, closing the lead to just a single point. La Vernia came alive in the fourth period, though, dropping in 18 points while allowing just 5 from Yoakum. When the final buzzer sounded, it was La Vernia with a hard-fought 36-24 win.

Autumn Light led the team with 13 points on the night, followed by Ciara Jenschke with 11 points, and Brooke Martinez with 10. Martinez earned another double-double on the year by also pulling down 11 rebounds in the game. She also had three assists, three steals, and a block.

On Jan. 23, the Lady Bears traveled to Gonzales to face the Lady Apaches. La Vernia got a much better start to this game, and led 8-4 after the first eight minutes of play. The Lady Bears outpaced the Lady Apaches 15-11 in the second period, and held a 23-15 lead at the break.

The Lady Bears kept things going in the third period, and outscored Gonzales 10-8. The pressure persisted in the fourth, and La Vernia dropped in another 13 points, while allowing just 10 points for Gonzales. As the game came to an end, it was La Vernia with a 46-33 victory.

Jordan Luensmann led the scoring efforts with 17 points, followed by Martinez with 13, and Light with 12 points. Martinez led the team in rebounds with six, and Jenschke was good for another five.

La Vernia was scheduled to host the district-leading Lady Panthers of Navarro on Jan. 27, and will be in Cuero this Friday, Jan. 30, to take on the Lady Gobblers. Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
