Weightlifters compete in Yorktown
LVISD — Members of the La Vernia Weightlifting Club gather for a group photo during their first competition of the season in Yorktown. Several athletes earned medals in the event.

Members of the La Vernia Weightlifting Club participated in their first contest of the year at the Yorktown Invitational. The meet had some great competition, which included 180 lifters from all over South Texas.

Connor Towns competes in the 275-pound weight class, and proved to be La Vernia’s top lifter of the meet. Towns lifted a total of 1,265 pounds, earning him third-place honors. Tristan Summy finished fifth in the 171-pound weight class, lifting an impressive 1,135 pounds. Another lifter who finished with a medal was Tyler Cosentino. He placed fifth in the 242-pound class with a total weight lifted of 1,110.

Sullivan Latka had the fourth highest squat in the 198-pound division with a lift of 445 pounds. Matthew Montgomery placed third in the bench in the 220-pound class with a solid lift of 300 pounds.

The La Vernia Weightlifting Club’s next competition will be an Olympic-style weightlifting meet at the IronCat Open. The event is scheduled for March 15 at Texas State University.
