Fine fiddling opens doors for Tyler Rakowitz
STEPHANIE SHEFFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY La Vernia High School graduate Tyler Rakowitz is a member of Hunter Hutchinson’s band, which has been opening shows for Aaron Watson for the past three weeks in New Mexico and West Texas.

Sometimes a little fiddling around gets you noticed.

It’s sure worked for La Vernia native Tyler Rakowitz, who’s been opening shows in New Mexico and West Texas with the Hunter Hutchinson band for country star Aaron Watson for the past three weeks.

Self-taught fiddle player Tyler grew up in La Vernia. He started playing at the age of 4 and has been playing for 15 years.

In 2012, Tyler won the “Wilson County’s Got Talent” show, sponsored by LV Shoestring Stage Productions.

A member of the La Vernia Mighty Bear Band, Tyler held various leadership roles with the band in high school. He also played with a group of talented musicians each Tuesday night at the former “Los Compadres” restaurant in La Vernia; he migrated to Wednesday evening jam sessions at Witte’s Bar-B-Que.

Tyler now attends Texas Tech University, where he is studying accounting and business; he also was a member of the Texas Tech “Goin’ Band from Raiderland.”

Following his high school graduation, Tyler was tagged by several friends on Facebook with the news that Aaron Watson was seeking a fiddle player. It was through those tags that Hunter Hutchinson found Tyler, as his band also was looking for a fiddle player. Tyler and Hunter were both Texas Tech students, so Hunter’s band was a good fit for the La Vernia musician.

Tyler said he credits and is grateful to his parents, grandparents, La Vernia Band Director Stacy Clark, and his mentors, Rocky King, Bryan Duckworth and Sandra Parrish, for their help and support along the way.

Hunter Hutchinson started his band in June 2013 in Abilene. Along with Tyler, the band includes CJ Nixon, Miller Davis, and Kelly Tindall, all of Abilene. With the exception of Kelly, who attends South Plains College, the band members are all Texas Tech University students.

Hunter and Aaron Watson have a unique friendship; Aaron played a benefit event for Hunter’s dad, who lost his battle with cancer in 2008.

Aaron Watson produced Hunter’s new album, “What Do You Say?” set for release March 3.

This summer, Tyler with Hunter and his band ...will be on the road with Aaron Watson as the opening band for much of his tour.
