Bears win bi-district, fall in area championship
LVISD Members of the 2014-15 La Vernia Bear varsity basketball team gather following their bi-district game. The Bears ended their season with a playoff loss to La Marque for the area championship.

After finishing at the top of the district, and then winning a bi-district title in the first round of the playoffs, the La Vernia Bears basketball team saw its season come to an end last Friday, as it fell short in the area championship against La Marque.

The Bears finished as the co-champs of District 26-4A, and then squared off with Salado in the first round of the playoffs. La Vernia played a solid game, and cruised to an easy 55-35 win during the contest in Pflugerville. From there, the Bears advanced to the area championship against La Marque.

The Cougars jumped out to a big lead in the first period, outscoring the Bears 20-6. Things settled down in the second, but La Marque continued to stay ahead, and added 2 points to the lead. As halftime settled in, it was the Cougars on top of the Bears, 29-13.

While the Cougars’ points production continued to decline in the third period, and La Marque scored just 6 points in eight minutes, the same thing happened to the Bears. La Vernia managed just 4 points, and things were looking grim.

The Bears got rolling in the fourth and final period of play, and Zach Jarzombek led the way with 12 points. In total, La Vernia scored 22 points, but La Marque kept pace with another 20 of its own. As the final buzzer rang out in Victoria, it was the Cougars with a 55-39 win over the Bears.

The loss was a disappointment for La Vernia Nation, but the Bears had a solid season overall. Despite a nearly even season record of 16-15, the Bears stepped up during the district season and made an 11-2 run through their opponents to win a share of the district crown. They also won the bi-district title.

The team will lose a number of talented seniors to graduation, but will return more than half their roster, and will undoubtedly be ready to make another run.
