Lady Bears drop district opener

In the team’s district opener last Tuesday night in Yoakum, the La Vernia Lady Bears softball team came up short to the Lady Bulldogs, falling by the final score of 6-3.

Things started out well for La Vernia in the top of the first inning, as Alisen Saenz led off, and reached first base on an error. Corley Carpenter then stepped up and also reached on an error, which allowed Saenz to make her away around to home for a 1-run lead.

Renee Cummings and Kara Myrick each popped out, but the Lady Bears weren’t finished in the inning. Annie Roswell kicked off the two-out rally with a single to right field that scored Carpenter from second. Kailee Wegehaupt then ripped a single to right, and Roswell was safe at third. Marissa Hernandez came up to the plate, and Wegehaupt used the opportunity to steal second. Things went bad on the play for Yoakum, and Roswell came in for the Lady Bears’ third run, and Wegehaupt ended up safely at third. Hernandez was later struck out to retire the side.

Yoakum climbed right back into the game by scoring 1 run in the bottom of the frame. La Vernia threatened with a pair of base runners in the top of the second, but their efforts yielded no runs. The Lady Bulldogs rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the second, though, and took a 4-3 advantage into the top of the third inning.

The third inning flew by as both sides were quickly retired, and La Vernia got nothing in the top of the fourth. Yoakum took advantage of a walk and an error, added in a single and a double, and padded its lead with another 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Things settled down from there, as neither team really found much momentum. Kara Myrick drew a walk in the fifth to give La Vernia a base runner, but no runs came from it. Yoakum managed a pair of three-up, three-down defensive stands in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, and the game ended by the final score of 6-3.

Cummings earned a total of six strikeouts pitching for the Lady Bears, but also gave up 6 earned runs. It goes down as a loss for her, as well as a loss for the team, as they start district play at 0-1.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to participate in the Seguin Tournament March 6-7, and were set to resume district play March 10 at home.
