St. Ann’s fall festival is Oct. 2

The St. Ann Catholic Church in La Vernia will hold its annual fall festival on Sunday, Oct. 2, with fun for everyone at the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Hall and grounds on U.S. 87 in La Vernia.

The event is well-known for its turkey dinner, barbecued by the men of the church throughout the evening before the event, primarily using mesquite wood. Plates of turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings will be available for $7 per plate.

Also available will be bowls of bigos, a Polish hunter’s stew, prepared by the church pastor, the Rev. Stanislaw Fiuk. The stew will be served with German bread for $7 per bowl.

Desserts, including various homemade delicacies, will be available to finish off your meal.

Festival visitors can enjoy bingo from noon to 4 p.m., children’s games, and live and silent auctions. The live auction will feature a number of handmade queen-size quilts; these include themed quilts featuring logos of the University of Texas and Texas A&M, horses, angels, and more, all made by women of the parish.

The St. Ann’s Community Quilt, 110 inches square, is a log-cabin block design in a barn-raising layout, machine-pieced by Roberta Salinas and hand-quilted by Rose Mary Moczygemba, Janice McMahon, Bettie Trainer, Mary Lou Rutkowski, Doris Cinek, Eva Lopez, and Roberta Salinas, with binding hand-stitched by Rutkowski.

Kids can enjoy a number of inflatable structures. Access is $5 per armband, providing five hours of fun.

Visitors also can find a range of homemade and handmade items at the festival’s country store. These range from home-canned produce to baked goods and plants to craft items and more.

The St. Ann’s parishioners invite the entire community to enjoy the festival and expresses thanks for the wonderful community support the event has always enjoyed.
