Pickup trucks crash on U.S. 87
GARY DARNELL Traffic maneuvers slowly around one of two wrecked pickup trucks following a March 6 crash on U.S. 87 north of La Vernia.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash March 6 just at approximately 10 a.m. near the corner of U.S. 87 and C.R. 361, which sent both drivers to area hospitals with minor injuries.

According to DPS Trooper Eleazar Juarez, 24-year-old Scott Lemorris of San Antonio who was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 registered to the city of La Vernia Department of Public Works was stopped in the left lane of northbound U.S. 87. Lemorris was waiting to make a left turn when a northbound 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 72-year-old Leonard Schroeder of La Vernia struck the rear of his truck.

Juarez said Schroeder’s vehicle went airborne and rolled twice when it landed before the truck righted itself onto its wheels. After he escaped the vehicle, Schroeder’s truck caught fire.

The La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department responded to extinguish the blaze. Lemorris and Schroeder were transported by the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services to the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville and Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, respectively.

The La Vernia Police Department and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist at the scene.
