City to host town hall meeting

The city of La Vernia is hosting a town hall meeting on Monday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. in the La Vernia Primary School cafeteria. The city is requesting citizen input for the development of a new comprehensive plan. Mayor Harold Schott advised, “The original comprehensive plan was developed in 2000 and the average lifespan of a comprehensive plan is around ten years, so it is time for an updated plan. The city has partnered with the Lower Colorado River Authority Community and Economic Development Division and the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative Economic Development Division to create a plan that will address the many different facets of community development in an overall, holistic approach. Community input is vital for a successful plan.”

In June, a steering committee, comprised of La Vernia residents and citizens residing in the county surrounding the city, was formed as the beginning of collecting citizen input for the development of the plan. In August, a community survey was available for citizens to offer ideas, suggestions, and demographic information regarding the future of La Vernia. The survey recognized four areas that citizens identified as priorities: housing; revitalization of the Chihuahua Street area; economic development; and parks, recreation, and open space. The four areas will be the focus of informal roundtable discussions at the town hall meeting. Citizens will participate in the roundtable discussions to further pinpoint specific concerns and desires in the future of La Vernia.

“The city is very aware that there are limited resources available to local governments for projects. Understanding the expectations of the citizens and educating citizens regarding the use of public monies for projects will help both the city in understanding where to focus resources, and create realistic expectations for the citizens.” stated Mayor Schott. “The town hall meeting is an opportunity for the voices of the citizens to be heard, and the city officials and staff will be listening. Growth is something that seems to be coming our way, and having a strong plan supported by the citizens is just one of the tools that must be in the city’s toolbox to manage growth and maintain the strong rural values that make La Vernia a wonderful community,” Schott said.

“We really hope that citizens will take time out of their busy lives to join us at the town hall meeting on Oct. 10 at the Primary School. In an effort to make the evening meeting easier for citizens to attend, the local H-E-B grocery store has graciously agreed to provide a meal to be served before the meeting,” Schott said.
