Vehicle ignites after crash at problem intersection
TRACEE NEAL — La Vernia News reader Tracee Neal captured this image of a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser fully engulfed in flames shortly after it collided with a 2001 Dodge Ram that was towing a utility trailer through the intersection of F.M. 775 and F.M. 1346 in La Vernia.

Charges are pending, according to Sgt. Danny Pitts of the La Vernia Police Department, following a two-vehicle crash March 13 at the intersection of F.M. 775 and F.M. 1346 here.

Pitts said that at approximately 12:25 p.m., 27-year-old Elijah Gleason of San Antonio was attempting to make a left turn onto F.M. 1346 from F.M. 775 in a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Gleason reported that he did not see 43-year-old Oscar Fermin’s oncoming 2001 Dodge Ram that was towing a cargo trailer through the intersection, as other vehicles were turning right onto F.M. 1346.

Gleason attempted to make the turn and struck the rear of the truck before striking the trailer, which caused the two to become disconnected. The Toyota then caught fire.

Both drivers escaped without injury, Pitts said.

In addition to police, the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department, the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist at the scene.

The crash is the latest in a string of wrecks that have occurred at the intersection as vehicular traffic in the area continues to increase. The Texas Department of Transportation is working to install a traffic light there, Pitts said.
