Lady Bears top Cuero

Lady Bears top Cuero
LVISD Renee Cummings delivers a pitch during the Lady Bear’ 12-9 district win over Cuero.

In varsity softball action last week, the La Vernia Lady Bears broke even last week, topping Cuero at home 12-9, and then falling to Wimberley by the final of 10-2.

At home last Tuesday, the Lady Bears gave up a first-inning run to Cuero to fall into an early hole, but came back in the bottom of the inning to score 3 runs. Ali Saenz and Corley Carpenter each drew walks to start things off, and then Renee Cummings singled into centerfield to score Saenz. Kara Myrick grounded out to shortstop, but Carpenter came around to score. Cummings later scored the Lady Bears’ third run on a passed ball.

After holding Cuero in the top of the second inning, the Lady Bears added another 3 runs in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Gobblers responded with 3 runs of their own in the top of the third, and things were a lot closer at 6-4 in favor of La Vernia. The Lady Bears put together their third 3-run inning in a row, though, and led 9-4 heading into the fourth.

No one added to the scoreboard in the fourth inning, but Cuero scored a single run in the top of the fifth. The Lady Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning, though, scoring 3 more runs. Saenz started things off with a walk, and Carpenter reached on an error that eventually allowed Saenz to score. Cummings drew a walk, and Taylor Spoo came in to run. Myrick hit an infield single, and the Lady Bears had the bases loaded.

Annie Roswell put the ball in play, but a heads-up throw from the pitcher to home got Carpenter out at the plate. Kailee Wegehaupt hit a two-out single to reach base, and Spoo and Myrick ran around for 2 more runs.

Cuero had its best inning of the night in the top of the sixth, as the Lady Gobblers combined several hits and walks for 4 Cuero runs. The Lady Gobblers had narrowed the gap to 3 runs, but it wasn’t enough to overtake La Vernia. The Lady Bears held on from there, and locked up the district win by the final of 12-9.

On Friday, the team traveled to Wimberley to face the Lady Texans. The Lady Bears struggled early, as Wimberley scored 2 runs in the first inning, 2 runs in the third inning, and another 3 runs in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.

The Lady Bears finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. Wegehaupt drew a walk to start things off, and then Addison Dennis reached base on an error. Marissa Hernandez came to the plate and ripped a two-out single into left field, scoring Wegehaupt and Dennis to make it a 7-2 game. Wimberley added another 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, though, and then held the Lady Bears in the top of the seventh to end the game by the final score of 10-2.

The games left the Lady Bears at 11-6 on the season, and the team is 3-2 in district play. La Vernia was set to return to action this Friday, March 27, as it hosts Canyon Lake.
