Lady Bears split district games

In a pair of district games held last week, the Lady Bears were 50/50, as they knocked off Yoakum 11-1, but then fell to Gonzales by the score of 13-5.

The Lady Bears wasted no time against Yoakum, as La Vernia hung 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Corley Carpenter got things rolling as she drew a one-out walk, and then Renee Cummings went yard, blasting a 2-run homer over into deep left field. Kara Myrick got on base to keep things going, but Annie Roswell and Kailee Wegehaupt went down to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Bears added to their lead. Carpenter once again started things out with a walk, and Cummings drew a walk, as well. Taylor Spoo came in to run for Cummings, and Myrick put the ball in play, allowing everyone to remain safe. Roswell came to the plate with the bases loaded, and she picked up a sacrifice fly as she sent the ball into left field. Roswell was out, but Carpenter scored, and Spoo moved over to third.

Wegehaupt drew a walk to load the bases once again, and Addison Dennis stepped to the plate. Dennis singled into center to score Spoo, and the lead was 4-0 for La Vernia. Rachel Goddard drew a walk, sending Myrick home for the Lady Bears’ 5th run of the game.

La Vernia added 3 more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-0. Yoakum scored 1 run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Bears went back to work in the bottom of the inning. After scoring 3 more runs in the bottom of the frame, the game was called by virtue of the 10-run rule.

Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, the team didn’t have as much luck on April 2 against Gonzales.

La Vernia started off well by scratching a run in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Apaches came back to score 4 runs of their own. Gonzales added another 5 runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 9-1 lead.

The Lady Bears scored 3 runs in the top of the third, and 1 more in the fifth, to make it a 9-5 game, but couldn’t eliminate the Gonzales advantage. The Lady Apaches tacked on 4 insurance runs in the sixth, and retired the side in the top of the seventh inning to preserve a 13-5 victory over La Vernia.

Just like the guys, the girls were scheduled to host Navarro on April 7, and will be in Cuero on Friday, April 10. The Lady Bears next home game will be Tuesday, April 14, as they welcome the Lady Texans of Wimberley. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
